The ideal container for the citrus season

Which container to choose for the citrus season: vented or solid bulk bins, foldable crates and the buy-and-rent mix that optimises costs.

The ideal container for the citrus season

When the season starts, the container stops being a simple cost and becomes a lever for quality, productivity and waste control. Choosing well between bulk bins for lemons, bulk bins for citrus or Big Box makes the difference in ventilation, handling, traceability, stacking, hygiene and dispatch pace.

The ideal container for citrus depends on your critical point. If you prioritise volume, strength, stacking and internal logistics, the plastic bulk bin or Big Box is the most efficient option. If you prioritise handling by unit, picking or order preparation, vented 60x40 crates fit better. And if your priority is presentation for retail, cardboard is usually more suitable. In-season, a mix is the norm.

What the container must deliver during the citrus season

Before talking about models, it is worth focusing on six key requirements:

  • Real ventilation, to prevent condensation and trapped heat.

  • Protection against knocks and abrasion during handling and transport.

  • Stable stacking in the warehouse, cold store and lorry.

  • Hygiene and cleanliness, with material suitable for food contact.

  • Logistics compatibility with forklifts, pallet trucks and standard dimensions.

  • Cost per use: reuse, repair and service life.

In practice, plastic bulk bins stand out for strength, stacking and hygiene: they are made from high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and designed for the fruit and vegetable supply chain.

Bulk bins for citrus: when they are the best option

If your operation moves a lot of volume (field intake, reception, sorting, storage, cold store and dispatch), bulk bins for citrus are usually the reference for the season.

Vented or solid: the choice that most affects the fruit

  • Vented bulk bin: works very well with citrus thanks to its breathability, drainage and lower risk of condensation with temperature changes.

  • Solid bulk bin: offers more protection against external dirt, but requires closer control of humidity and condensation.

If you are unsure, we go into it in this guide: vented or solid bulk bin.

Dimensions and logistics: why the standard matters

During the season, what you want is flow: a container that fits forklifts, aisles, cold stores and lorries. That is why the large 1200x1000 mm formats are common, with different heights depending on the load and stacking.

On the base of the bulk bin:

  • With skids: improves movement with a pallet truck and certain internal circuits.

  • With legs: usually enough if the operation is centred on forklifts and stacking in the cold store.

When another format is worth it

When the main task is preparing orders, the vented 60x40 foldable crate performs better: it is handled by unit, makes better use of space on the return trip and makes it easier to build mixed pallets. Cardboard, meanwhile, is chosen when presentation and box-based sales format matter more.

Buying, renting and second-hand

During the season, buying more is not always the winning move. Many operations work better with a combination:

  • Buying for the stable base of rotation.

  • Rental for volume peaks.

  • Second-hand or reconditioned to expand your stock at a controlled cost.

  • Repair and washing to extend service life and arrive hygienic at every stage.
