The plastic-versus-wood argument almost always starts badly, by comparing purchase prices. A wooden bulk bin is cheaper on the day you pay for it, and that is where the obvious advantage ends. From that point on, things come into play that never show up on the invoice: how many seasons it holds up, whether you can wash it, whether your customer will accept it at an audit, and whether it complicates your life when exporting.

This article is not about convincing you of anything: we sell plastic, and we also buy back and recycle it, so the honest thing to do is give you the criteria and let you run the numbers yourself. There are uses where wood still makes sense, and it is worth saying so.

Durability: the cost-per-season criterion

Comparing purchase prices between two containers with different service lives tells you nothing. The calculation that actually works is simple:

cost per season = purchase price ÷ number of seasons it lasts

Add to that what you spend each year on repairs, replacing breakages and storage. A purely illustrative example, to run with your own figures: if a container costs you twice as much but lasts three times as long and barely needs repairing, it works out cheaper per use. If it only lasts a little longer, it does not pay off. The formula is the same for both materials; what changes is where you get the figures from.

And those figures are yours, not ours. Look at your history: how many wooden units you replace each season, how much time someone spends nailing boards and removing splinters, how many get discarded because of damp. That number, divided across your fleet, is your real replacement rate. It is the most honest figure in the whole comparison.

What genuinely is a difference of material, not opinion: wood absorbs water, swells, splinters, and its nails and staples work loose; high-density polyethylene does not absorb water, does not splinter and has no metal parts to come away. On a plastic bulk bin the typical fault is a leg or a skid, and that part is swapped out with a spare part in minutes, without scrapping the whole unit.

Hygiene: where wood struggles

Here the difference is not one of degree, it is one of nature. Wood is porous: it absorbs juices, blood and wash water, and it cannot be thoroughly sanitised with pressure-washing or run through a high-temperature tunnel without degrading. Plastic gets washed, dried and goes straight back into service.

Materials intended for food contact are generally subject to Regulation (EC) 1935/2004, which requires that they do not transfer components to food in quantities that could pose a risk. Our containers are made from food-contact-grade HDPE. What this means for you day to day is that, when a customer audit or an inspection comes round, a washable, traceable container gives you answers, and a porous one gives you questions.

If you work in a boning room, in food production with customer audits, or in any process with systematic washing between uses, the conversation is more or less closed. That is where you turn to standardised meat crates and solid bulk bins, which also do not drip onto the unit below in the stack.

Exporting: ISPM-15

This is the point where the difference is regulatory, not a matter of opinion. Wooden packaging used in international trade is subject to the international standard ISPM-15, which requires phytosanitary treatment and the corresponding mark on the piece. It is a requirement that exists because wood is plant material and can carry pests.

Plastic is not plant material, so it falls outside that requirement: there is no phytosanitary treatment or ISPM-15 mark to manage. For anyone who exports regularly, that removes a recurring formality and the risk of a shipment being held up over an incorrect or illegible stamp. We are not talking about specific timeframes or countries here, that depends on each destination and your freight forwarder, but about a requirement that simply does not apply to you if the packaging is plastic. It is one of the most commonly cited reasons customers switch their pallets to plastic.

Weight, stacking and space

Plastic allows nestable, stackable designs with very repeatable tolerances: unit after unit, the stack behaves the same way. Wood works, deforms and each piece ages at its own rate, so stacking to several heights becomes less predictable as seasons accumulate.

With smaller containers the difference shows even more on the return trip. Rigid fruit crates measuring 600 x 400 mm nest inside each other when empty, and foldable crates collapse to reduce return volume. That saving on empty-leg haulage does not exist with a traditional wooden crate.

When wood still makes sense

Let us be fair: there are scenarios where there is no need to switch.

  • One-way shipments where the container does not come back and the destination treats it as waste.

  • Very small, occasional volumes, where the initial investment does not pay for itself.

  • Uses with no direct food contact, no washing, no exporting and no audits.

Outside those cases, plastic wins by accumulation: it lasts longer, it washes, it does not complicate exporting and, when its working life ends, it still has value. That is the final leg of the calculation almost nobody factors in: a worn-out plastic bulk bin is not rubbish. We buy used containers and feed them into the reuse and recycling circuit, so you recover part of the value at the end. Broken wood is a waste-management cost.

How to decide in your case

Gather four figures: how many units you replace a year, whether you wash between uses or not, whether you export, and how much you pay to store idle containers. With that, the cost per season for each material works itself out, and it is usually a lot more telling than any brochure. Recommendations change depending on what you do; in sectors you have the approach by activity, and in the frequently asked questions the doubts that come up most.
