How a batch of used bulk bins is really valued, what you can do to get paid more, and when it pays to repair them instead of selling.
Almost every warehouse in the Region has a corner full of idle containers. Bulk bins from old seasons, odd units of a model you no longer use, material left over from when you changed format. It takes up space, produces nothing, and loses a little value with every year that passes.
That container has value. Not what it cost you, but not zero either, and rather more than most people assume. This article explains how a batch of used bulk bins is really valued, what you can do to get paid more, and how it works with us. What determines what you will be paid
There is no fixed rate. The price of a batch comes down to four things, and all four can be estimated over the phone if you describe them well.
The model. A standard 1200 × 1000 mm format has an immediate market: plenty of people want it and it moves quickly. An unusual model, a non-standard size, or one from a manufacturer that no longer supplies spares, is worth quite a bit less even in perfect condition, because it moves slowly.
Actual condition. This accounts for most of the difference. A whole unit, with no cracks in the wall or base and with its legs or skids complete, is reusable and gets paid for as a container. One with a split wall or a caved-in base is only worth something as recyclable material, an order of magnitude less. In between is the bulk of it: units with a broken leg or a bent skid, which are repaired by swapping the part and go back into use as containers.
The quantity. A large, uniform batch is collected in one go, fills a lorry and is worth the trip. Twenty loose units of five different models cost almost as much to collect and are worth much less. If you can group them, group them.
Where it is. The same as buying, in reverse: delivery eats into the margin. Us being in Archena and you being in the Vega, the Guadalentín or the Campo de Cartagena is what makes the sums work.
Three things that raise the price and cost you little
Group it by model. Sorting by type and height before anyone arrives turns an undefined pile into valuable batches. This is the one that makes the most difference.
Give it a once-over. Remove leftover soil, produce or film. It does not need a thorough wash, we take care of that, but a dirty batch gets valued down as a precaution.
Split it yourself into two: whole and broken. If you do the sorting, the valuation is more accurate and faster. And you avoid everything being lumped into the cheapest category simply because it could not be told apart.
And one thing that lowers the price: overstating the condition. If the batch arrives in worse shape than described, it has to be revalued on-site and everything is delayed. Be realistic and the offer we give you will be the one that holds.

You tell us about it. Approximate quantity, model or size, condition by eye, and where it is. Photos of a couple of units and of the pile are worth more than any description.
We give you a valuation. Based on that information. If the batch is large or mixed, we may come and take a look.
We arrange collection. We work around your calendar; it is normal to do it out of season, when the warehouse is quiet.
The deal is closed on the terms agreed at valuation.

What happens to your bulk bins afterwards
Worth knowing, because it is what separates selling a container from throwing it away.
What is whole is inspected, washed and goes back into circulation as second-hand material: someone who needs to reinforce their stock this season buys it at a better price than new. What has a broken part is repaired, a leg, a skid, a lid, and does the same. And what has nothing left to give goes into reuse and recycling with a licensed waste manager: the polyethylene is recovered as material and goes back into production.

Selling is not always what suits you best
Let's be honest, because sometimes the best answer is not to sell.
If the container is whole and you are going to need containers for two more seasons, repairing it and keeping it works out better than selling now and buying later: the gap between what you are paid for used and what a replacement costs is not covered by any storage saving.
If what you have too much of is capacity at a given moment, not container, look at rental before getting rid of anything: the problem might be one of timing, not of stock.
