IBC or 1000-litre drum: what it is and what transport regulation applies

When someone calls asking for "a 1000-litre drum", they are almost always looking for a GRG. It's the same piece of kit: that cube-shaped white plastic tank inside a metal cage, mounted on a pallet, with a tap at the bottom and a filling neck on top. GRG (Gran Recipiente para Granel) is the Spanish name; IBC (Intermediate Bulk Container) is the English name you'll see in any catalogue. "1000-litre drum" is what people in the field call it. All three refer to the same thing, and it's worth knowing before you ask for a quote, so you don't end up comparing apples and oranges.

Where there are real differences, and where people go wrong, is in what each IBC is for and which regulations apply to it. Not all of them are suited to the same purpose, and the line that separates them isn't price or appearance: it's what you're going to put inside and whether it travels by road. Let's take this step by step.

What exactly a 1000-litre IBC is

An IBC is a rigid container for liquids and granular materials of intermediate capacity: more than a drum, less than a tanker. The 1000-litre format is the standard because it matches the footprint of a European pallet and is handled with a forklift or pallet truck like any other palletised load. Compared with 200-litre drums, a single IBC saves you five handling operations and a fair amount of warehouse space.

In our catalogue we work with two lines of 1000-litre IBC: the food-use version, with an integrated metal cage and pallet and a drain tap, and the agricultural-use version, reconditioned, inspected and leak-tested, intended for water, liquid fertilisers or plant-protection products on the farm. Both are made of HDPE and both hold up well. The question isn't which is better, but which matches your product.

Food contact: 1935/2004 and common sense

If the IBC is going to hold a liquid intended for food use, must, brine, juice, oil, additives, the material that touches the product has to be fit for food contact under Regulation (EC) 1935/2004, and its use inside your plant falls within your hygiene and HACCP plan under Regulation (EC) 852/2004. In practice this means two very concrete things for you: that the container comes with documentation certifying its suitability, and that you have it written down how it's cleaned, who cleans it and how often.

That's why, for direct food use, we recommend a new IBC. A reconditioned one has held something before, and even if it has passed cleaning and a leak test, the history of what it previously contained is information that rarely travels complete with the container. For irrigation water, soaps, detergents, already-diluted plant-protection products or industrial uses, reconditioned is an excellent buy. For juice that's going to be bottled, it isn't.

ADR: the part that gets overlooked most

Here's the critical point. If the liquid you're transporting by road is classified as dangerous goods, many concentrated plant-protection products, solvents, acids, certain industrial cleaning products, the transport is governed by ADR, the European agreement concerning the international carriage of dangerous goods by road. And ADR doesn't just regulate how you drive: it regulates the container itself.

An IBC suitable for ADR is a type-approved IBC, and you can see it: it carries a UN mark, engraved or on a plate, with a code identifying the type of container, the manufacturer and the manufacturing date. That mark is what certifies that model passed the required tests. In addition, type-approved IBCs are subject to periodic inspections and tests, and their reuse and reconditioning have their own rules within ADR.

The practical consequence: a food-use or agricultural-use IBC without a UN mark cannot be used to transport dangerous goods by road, no matter how new, clean and leak-tight it is. It's fine for storage on your farm or in your warehouse, fine for moving water, but not for going out on the road with a classified product. And if the type-approved IBC you have has an expired inspection period, it stops being valid even though the mark is still there.

Quick rule of thumb before buying: check the safety data sheet of the product you're going to put inside. If it has a UN number and hazard class, you need a type-approved container and to talk to your carrier or your ADR safety adviser about marking, inspection periods and documentation. If it doesn't, a food-use or agricultural-use IBC is more than enough. Never decide this based on what your neighbour tells you: the specific deadlines and codes are a job for the specialist, not the catalogue.

What to check on a used IBC

If you're going for reconditioned, always check the same things: the tightness of the body, the condition of the valve and tap (this is where leaks show up first), a cage with no bent bars or broken welds, a sound pallet, and genuinely clean interior. Our reconditioned IBCs leave inspected and leak-tested. And if you have empty containers sitting idle that you're no longer going to use, tell us: they enter our reuse and recycling circuit.
